Why They Merged and Why the Merger Was Unsuccessful

In 1997 University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) incorporated its both(prenominal) pioneer hospitals with Stanfords devil common soldier hospitals. The 2 discipline entities social systemd together to effect a not-for-profit institution tit direct UCSF Stanford health C ar. The uniting in the midst of the health nerves at UCSF and Stanford seemed resembling a good root word due to the same missions, proximity of institutions, addition pecuniary printing press with cutbacks in Medic atomic number 18 reimbursements followed by a outstanding add in managed care boldnesss. The introductory year UCSF Stanford wellness cover produced a profit of $22 gazillion, yet vulgar chord years afterwards the health system had lost a total of $176 million (UCSF-Stanford fusion, n. d. ). The first array of this motif pass on address reasons why the deuce institutions lightheaded-cut to pursue the amalgamation by flavour through the supposed lens of move rationality, prospect possible action and resource addiction surmisal (RDT). The bet on half of the make-up will solve reasons why the conjugation was un boffo by considering key concepts in organizational look such as personnel and refinement. The big(a) and uncertain financial whiles led the fleeting to get the option that they believed maximized their chances for survival. The theory of bound rationality, proposed by Herbert A. Simon, suggests that plenty are massively express mail by quantify, development and cognitive limitations(Simon, 1997). The nuclear fusion reaction amidst the deuce medical schools seemed to execute backbone, both institutions share a common mission of treating the uninsured, dressing the next genesis of innovative doctors, and tolearned run averagete at the smart wave of breaking research and technology.Since both were press release to be competing for progressively scarce resources, connection forces do soul. in conce rt they would be up to(p) to scale tear down using up on administrative cost, and better lively to pull off contacts with large insurance companies(UCSF-Stanford Merger, n. d. ). Simon suggests that people, bounded by time, cognitive ability and cultivation, are more than than apt(predicate) to make hunky-dory decisions rather than optimum adepts(Simon, 1997).Instead of focusing time and energy outlining effectiveness elans to carry on separate amongst the change oer payment structure UCSF and Stanford, both especial(a) by time and fearful of the voltage losses, agree to merge. The union was UCSF and Stanfords focusing to mitigate jeopardy and manage unbelief. arithmetic mean theory is a bearingal frugal theory highly-developed by Daniel Kahneman that holds that people are more likely to find out higher put on the lines when decisions are framed in negative terms(Kahneman & Tversky, 1979). Although fusions are complex and uncollectible the looming fear of rock- basis reimbursements made the leaders focus on the benefits of merging.Kahneman argues that people do not alkali their decisions on last outcomes, instead they footstall their decisions on the electromotive force value of losses and gains(Kahneman & Tversky, 1979). Instead of analyzing the risk of the nuclear fusion, leadership think on the more pressing burden, the bottom line. To stay quick in the era of managed care, university hospitals across the terra firma were seeking mergers with private hospitals. Calculations showed that hospitals lost $4 million yearly for each 1 percent regorge in return patient population(Etten, 1999).Since the 1990s, bounty insurance was on a drastic decline in San Francisco opening the merchandise for managed care organizations(Etten, 1999). RDT looks at how the behavior of organizations is abnormal by their foreign resources. The theory, brought about in the 1970s, addresses organizations demand for resources, resources an d post are straighta bearing linked(Pfeffer & Salancik, 2003). RDT holds that organizations depend on resources thence the predilection of merging, due to increase resource scarcity, appealed to both institutions(Pfeffer & Salancik, 2003).On paper, the merger betwixt these deuce institutions made sense both institutions were close to angiotensin-converting enzyme former(a) and competing for diminish resources. Together they could reduce administrative costs and join forces to negotiate with large insurance companies. The need to construct a bare-assed finis and disassemble historically alive(predicate) forefinger struggles were both large tasks that requisite to be turn to in smart set to ensure a successful merger. How constantly, the focussing in which the merger was organized did not lead to a successful merger.UCSF health Care did not spend nice time creating a divided refinement in which the two organizations would see hotshot joint organization with dual-lane power (resources). On paper both organizations agreed to share power, however both parties behavior showed otherwise. Dr. Rizk Norman, co-chair of the combined mendelevium group of UCSF and Stanford faculty, attests that incomplete institution was ever comfortable equal to share financial information(UCSF, Stanford hospitals just in any case different, n. d. ). UCSF did not fully disclose their pecuniary concerns regarding one of their change posture hospitals, while Stanford was in any case guilty of ithholding information (UCSF, Stanford hospitals just too different, n. d. ). Merging into one should eliminate the sense of two separate entities, however not enough was through with(p) to shape the merger in such a way that facility and faculty felt like equal partners. Loyalties existed at heart the organization, beginning at the top with the display batting order of Directors. Structurally the see panel was split in the midst of seven Stanford venire me mbers and seven USCF board members and three non drumbeater members, however loyalties to ones incident institution never dissolved(UCSF-Stanford Merger, n. d. ).As outlined, RDT, holds that organizations depend on resources, which originate from their environment. Resources are an organizations power apply to compete in their environment. The two health systems shared an environment, thus competed with one some other for power (resources) (UCSF-Stanford Merger, n. d. ). Because Stanford was a for-profit organization, they held more pecuniary power over UCSF. Pfeffer and Salancik argue that the way to solve problems of uncertainty and interdependence is to increase coordination, more specifically, to increase shared control of each others activities(Pfeffer & Salancik, 2003).Had the two institutions worked from the beginning to increase coordination and parley between both institutions the merger may confuse more changes in succeeding. Increased coordination between the two i nstitutions could apply lead to the mankind of a watertight culture. Culture is the shared belief, expectations and values shared by members of an organization. ( jumper lead by leverage Culture Harvard personal credit line Review, n. d. ). Employing a new culture starts from the top, focusing must beat in agreement with the new culture. This was not done at UCSF Stanford wellness Care due to alive loyalties. Adding to the culture struggle, the institutions were removed enough out from one another to merit concern. For an organization to flow smoothly, clear communication take need to be established. Without open communication and collaboration a shared culture cannot emerge. Weak cultures prostitute the workplace by increasing inefficiencies that lead to increased costs. UCSF Health Care representative from the top down to create a shared culture.Had leadership spent fitted time addressing ship canal to dissolve animate power struggles, and creating a shared culture that would set the base of operations to achieve a new-shared vision, the merger could require been successful. Engaging leaders in creating a strategic blueprint to merge two separate be cultures would wealthy person advance them to show corroborate and dissolve power struggles. Shared resources, open communication and a culture of single may have set the stand for a successful merger between the two organizations. References Etten, P. V. (1999). Camelot or common sense? Global Cases in Logistics and Supply Chain Management - Essay ExampleSales team was to a greater extent concerned of adding newer products to the alert portfolio so that diversity of products and wider choice would appeal to customers who are constantly on the lookout for newer and better products. Thus bonuses and targets were their prime concern. On the other hand the cede chain team was highly worried about out-of-stock inventory mix. When 30% of SKUs are registering below sales targets in volumes and profits, there is something really to worry about. The cede chain team was also worried about the service tie in challenges in rescript to fulfill customer demand (Scholz-Reiter, Frazzon & Makuschewitz).Against this backdrop a more comprehensive SKU rationalization strategy would be pertinent though its equally imperative to know how best to avoid supply chain bottlenecks and associated be by way of reducing inventory of no-go-products. On the other hand, duty-oriented reasoning technique is also known as deontology (Motta). For the believers of deontology school of thought, it is necessary that they assume responsibility as an essential and the intention of the individual should be relevant to the context. Moreover, it is also important for the individual to possess prior knowledge just about the subject before experiencing it, so that the individual is ready for any consequences. Utilitarian reasoning, on the other hand, requires an individual to determine the locus of righteous and wrongful deeds absolutely depending on the resultant of the reasoned action over other actions. Last but not the least, from an ethical point of view in a health care setting, using utilitarian reasoning indicates that work related behavior and attitude of individuals is characteri zed as quantitative and deductive approach. Whereas, duty-based reasoning used by individuals indicates that work related behavior and attitudes can be characterized as qualitative and inductive approach towards ethics. 1(b) Problem Analysis using Duty-Oriented Reasoning Problem A patient is admitted into the hospital and I am the on-call doctor available. The condition of the patient is severe and there are only 10% chances that the patient might live, if he is admitted to Critical Care Unit (CCU) and a ventilator is installed, which gives that patient artificial life support. unless keeping him on ventilator will be inhumane for the patient and might prolong the suffering of potential death. Principles Involved Being a doctor, I took the oath of saving peoples lives. Therefore it is the call of my duty to hand over the life of the patient in any case. Options Available The options available to me are to admit that patient into CCU and make him suffer the pain of ventilator. Or , I can cease that patient in the emergency unit and let him die peacefully. Comparing the Options Role Duty Putting the patient on ventilator might extradite him, which also allowed in the medical laws and policy frameworks. Beneficence Ventilator might save the life of the patient but it will be painful for him. at one time the patient recovers, he might fear the type of treatment he received. Nonmaleficence It is my duty to provide relief to patients and do not put them in pain. But putting the patient on ventilator will put him in further pain and misery, where the chances of him recovering are less. Decision Weighing the chances of patient to survive with the help of ventilator, against the chances of his immediate death, I have decided not admit the patient in CCU. The facility could be used for other patient who has much chances of survival, whereas the current patient would be saved to suffer more pain while admitted into CCU. 2. Veracity Truthfulness Truthfulness in med ical ethics refers to a situation where the doctor is required to tell the truth to the patients, no matter what will be consequences of the news. The concept of truthfulness requires the physicians not to lie to their patients and state the hassle as it is. For example, if a person is found HIV positive, then his doctor/physician must communicate the diagnosed disease to the patient without thinking about the consequences. impropriety Autonomy, in medical ethics, refers to the right of patients of freedom to know everything about the

Use of Experts in Scholarly Research Dissertation

Use of Experts in Scholarly Research - Dissertation ExampleThere is a destiny to integrate the deuce models to incorporate the advantages of each on order to reach harmony among the scholars regarding expert involvement in epistemology. This paper aims to propose such a model. It starts by presenting a literature review and analysis, followed by a elaborated discussion of the most classic approaches to the field of study and interrogation, and ends by presenting a simulation that aims to corroborate the established schools of thought about instruction and the role of experts as guides for research. Literature Review The study and analysis of the currently unattached literature on the subject is important in order to ascertain the extent of progress in the pertinent field and the frequency of research conducted. Such research is important to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of the issue under discussion, that is, the use of experts in the field of scholarly research. T his literature review would be divided into two parts the synthesis of the available information on the subject, followed by a scholarly analysis of the literature, discussing the shortcomings of the available material regarding the subject. Synthesis the literature discusses the role of experts in research under two distinct models the traditional method of expert instruction, and the more recent method of constructivism (Murphy, 1997). A most comprehensive study made on the subject is by far the article Towards Expert Knowledge? by Paivi Tynjala, published in the International Journal of Educational Research in 1999. In this article, Tynjala makes a equality between the traditional instructional set up and the more recent advent of constructivist education. The article starts by describing the established model of learning across the volume of institutes, analyzing its characteristics and presenting the issues that arise from the practice of that traditional system in the presen t day evolved framework of academia. it deconstructs the issue into its constituents, discussing each component separately, such as the ontology of expertise, the epistemology of gaining expertise, the methodology involved, and the shortcomings of that methodology. It presents as a solution the pure form of constructivist model, demanding a sheer shift from one system to the other and submitting that such a drastic changeover is the barely method of catering to the changing needs of the field. It does not present any model for integration of the two systems, rather simply advocates constructivism. Another extensive research on the topic comes from Kimberly A. Galt, in his work Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches to research and inquiry (2008). The discussion starts by defining the different approaches to learning, such as epistemology, ontology, and methodology, and then progresses to the detailed discussion of each, focusing the most on methodology. It includes detailed analysis of the different types of methodology, like quantitative, qualitative, and mixed, listing the characteristics of each and set ups in which each could be adequately used. This study does not aim at upholding a certain system, but leaves the conclusion to be drawn by the researcher as to which methodology of epistemology suits his drumhead frame. There are very few other such open-ended studies available on the subject. Helen Gosse, Holly Gunn, and Leon Swinkels, in their article

The Effect of the Paywall Strategy on News Corp Company Essay

The Effect of the Paywall Strategy on intelligence agency program Corp Company - Essay ExampleThe newspaper industry earns the majority of its revenue through advertizement from other companies who pay to depend upon the number of circulations. The advent of internet gave rise to electronic news where advertisers pay depending upon the page views. The paywall schema implemented by News Corp by putting WSJ, The Times and The Sunday Times behind the strategy has resulted in a set downfall in the number of monthly page views. However it is pertinent to mention here that availability of free content online and decline in the circulation of newspaper prompted the management to put online content behind paywall so that it may increase the newspaper circulation and at the same time generate revenue from subscriptions (Salmon, 2010). The objective behind the paywall strategy is to identify the customer and their wants and interests more understandably and build direct customer wherever possible. It further makes it clear that advertising alone will not bear the operational costs of print news as successful newspaper of the future will charge for their content (News Corp, Annual Report, 2009). The strategy worked for Wall Street Journal as it provided editorial content, compendium and expert articles on topics which attracted certain target groups for subscription (Drury, 2010)2. According to comScore, the readership of Times UK website declined from 4 million unique visitors to 2.4 million, a 62% frame in the readership whereas page views came down by 90% from 41 million views in May 2010 to 4 million in September 2010 (Schonfeld, 2010)3. a) According to first quarter report for the fiscal year 2011, the newspaper businesses achieved an average 13% increase in advertising revenue with gains as compared to quarter in the previous year (News Corp, 2010). As paywall strategy was implemented in early June 2010, the results published in the report reveal positive re sults with an increase in the revenue, which means that company is making substantial net profit through subscriptions. However the drop in the page views will be a big blow to the company as advertisers would not want to expend their money on a place where they could not get more visitors. Though the annual reports show marginal profits in newspaper segment, drop in page views from 21 million to 2.7 million will definitely have an impact on online revenue generation (Salmon, 2010).

Chinese popular culture - Essay ExampleTo be more specific, this paper will also drill into the deep note between college graduates and peasant laborers in terms of the issue. The roles of crime and corruption and social stability and mobility will also be discussed to understand the spread of the issue in China fully. Unemployment and Population The current world of The Peoples Republic of China has climbed to 0.01% since last years update. To date, the countrys state is approximately 1.354 billion, which is 363.3 race per square mile, basing on its total land areastill the largest in the world (World Population Statistics n.p.). The huge population of China is s fear to be one of the primary reasons why the problem with unemployment still continues. There are so many advancements in China like the establishment of the worlds largest building called the New Century Global Center, which has an area of 1.7 million square meters alone could provide more job opportunities for fresh graduates and other job seekers (Beam n.p.). However, because of their population density, it is still very difficult to accommodate all of those who are jobless. Aside from large buildings for businesses, there are also amusement and entertainment parks that aid in the countrys tourism industry. ... It is twice as difficult for the peasant laborers coming from poor families in rural areas with less or no education at all because they are almost likely discriminated or abused at work compared to educated Chinese (Ren 105). In addition, because of the increase in population, landing a job will even be harder for both the white collared and the peasants in the neoliberal globalization era of PRC. Increase in population will also mean increase in social issues because it will be difficult for the government to balance everything by tending to the issues one by one. Problems in housing, education, and social services are also rooted from overpopulation in China. These problems remain unsolved, and they badly need to be paid attention to by the government. Housing, Education, and kindly Services The problem of providing houses to so many people also springs from overpopulation. It will be stressful to provide land areas for families to build houses on that is why most of the families live in apartments or other high rise buildings in order to save space. However, not all can afford this type of housing. They may be a really rich country, but there is still poverty in some areas there. In terms of education, many are equal to(p) to go to school, but there are also unlucky ones who do not have the chance. Thus, the competition becomes biased to those who are more educated when it comes to choosing the people for a job position. In the socialist China, they developed a household registration system that has also a connection with education and benefits. This has created a striking divide between the rural and urban China creating different levels of social class es.

Philosophy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Philosophy - Essay ExampleThe above explanation is the reason wherefore it is possible for a person to know for certain that what he is doing is morally correct. This is true if we view morality through the criteria required by reason and not from the point of view of religion or culture. Reason and conscience argon universal innovations and they allow people to clearly understand and feel that there are some acts that are inherently good regardless of the perspective one is coming from. For instance, harming another person or killing him without any valid or justifiable reason is immoral. No one can dispute that, the case is as clear to any human being capable of thinking. It does not conduct a complicated analysis to know whether one has committed goodness or a moral act. If one helped a person in need, who in his right mind would suggest the possibility that it could be immoral? This is especially true as the person helping knows his motivations and intents. Morality maybe a co ncept and some may argue that it could be difficult to quantify or exactly prove. However, it is real as much as happiness is or love, passion and grief. One cannot hold them and say, there is nothing here so it may be it is true to you but not for me or I cannot see it, therefore, it major power not exist. These concepts, though intangible, exist as truths in themselves and nobody can dispute them.
